Fabien Favre – A Plastic-Free World, Travel and Ecology

Fabien Favre – Take Control Now Podcast
In this episode of the Take Control Now podcast, I had the pleasure of welcoming Fabien Favre.
We talked about his career as a teacher, his long-distance travel adventures, and above all his standout project: Un monde sous vide — a cycling journey across Europe without single-use plastic, which gave birth to a documentary film and a book.
Who is Fabien Favre?
Fabien is originally from Vevey, Switzerland.
He is a physical education and history teacher, passionate about sport and travel.
For several years, he has been exploring different ways of travelling, always with a focus on ecology and environmental impact.
Alongside teaching, he has taken on many projects: writing, long-distance travel, and documentary filmmaking.
The Un monde sous vide Project
In 2019, Fabien decided to cycle across Europe from south to north: more than 8,000 km covered in four months.
Two particular challenges guided his adventure:
- Avoiding all single-use plastic throughout the journey.
- Filming and documenting the experience to raise public awareness.
From this expedition came:
- A documentary film, screened in several cinemas across French-speaking Switzerland.
- A book — a detailed, introspective travel account weaving together a travel diary and ecological reflection.
"I'm no Mike Horn, but I believe travelling by bike is something anyone can do."

His Vision and Advice
Fabien advocates for a simple, accessible approach to ecology:
- Rethink consumption: reduce, reuse, recycle.
- Travel differently: favour cycling, walking, and local transport.
- Slow down: take time in a world that keeps speeding up.
- Balance: combine professional life (teaching) with creative passions.
His Inspirations
- Key reads: Vers la sobriété heureuse by Pierre Rabhi, Les furtifs by Alain Damasio, Dans les forêts de Sibérie by Sylvain Tesson.
- Films/documentaries: Home by Yann Arthus-Bertrand, The Shining by Kubrick.
- Quote: Edgar Morin – "We are technologically triumphant but culturally failing."
