Freelance Developer and AI: How I Transformed My Productivity with Claude Code

Final episode of the series "Website Redesign with AI". Previous episode: SEO Audit with AI.
The Recap
In 8 hours of effective work, with Claude Code, here's what was delivered on asuos.ch.
A complete internationalisation in 3 languages (FR, EN, PT) with next-intl, a detection middleware, and over 1,155 translation keys. 50 blog articles written and translated from podcast transcripts. 3 new landing pages (SaaS, Sprint, 404). Polished animated transitions: falling paper, theme ripple, infinite scroll. A full SEO audit covering the sitemap, RSS feeds, Schema.org, robots.txt and localised metadata. And a series of UX fixes: mobile menu, contrast, dead pages.
40 commits. 185 files. 14,500 lines added.
What AI Does Remarkably Well
Repetitive Work at Scale
Translating 21 articles into English, then 21 into Portuguese. Creating 385 translation keys across 3 JSON files. Migrating 12 routes to a new folder structure. These are tasks that take a human ages, not because they're difficult, but because there are so many of them. Claude Code executes them in minutes, with no copy-paste errors, no oversights.
Context Awareness
This isn't a tool that generates generic code. Claude Code read my contentlayer.config.ts, my React components, my tailwind.config.js, my route structure, and produced code that integrates naturally. The right CSS classes, the right component patterns, the right naming conventions.
Proactive Fixes
While adding internationalisation, Claude Code identified on its own that the sitemap was out of date, that the RSS feed was broken, that tags were mixing up languages. It didn't just do what I asked. It saw the consequences of what we were doing and anticipated them.
CSS and Animations
Honestly, writing CSS keyframes, 3D transforms and cubic timing functions is work that few developers enjoy. It's technical, it's precise, and every detail matters. Claude Code excels at this. It produces clean, performant CSS with the right vendor prefixes and the right fallbacks.
What AI Doesn't Do (Yet)
Business Decisions
"Should our SaaS page lead with price or quality?" Claude Code can't answer that. It can create a beautiful page, but positioning, messaging, strategy — that's human territory.
Conceptual Creativity
The idea of a page falling like a sheet of paper didn't come from the AI. It came from a conversation, a desire, a vision. The AI implemented that vision brilliantly, but it didn't initiate it.
Editorial Judgement
For the podcast articles, Claude Code produced excellent first drafts. But I was the one who decided which passages to highlight, what tone to use, which anecdotes to add. The editorial filter remains human.
Deep Domain Knowledge
Claude Code doesn't know that a particular client has specific sensitivities about a given topic, or that the Swiss market has characteristics that the French market doesn't. That implicit context is something only a human brings.
What It Changes for an Independent Developer
Time Becomes Elastic
The number one constraint for a freelancer is time. Every hour counts, every project is a trade-off between quality and deadlines. With Claude Code, that trade-off changes fundamentally. Tasks that used to take a week now take a day. Not because quality drops, but because the mechanical work disappears.
The Scope of What's Feasible Expands
Before, I would never have considered making my site trilingual "on the fly" between two client projects. That was a project in itself. Today, it's a Wednesday afternoon. It radically changes what a solo developer can accomplish.
The Role Evolves
With Claude Code, I spend less time writing code and more time deciding what to build, reviewing what's produced, and refining the result. It's a natural shift towards a technical leadership role, even when you're on your own.
A Word on Honesty
This article, and this entire series, was written with the help of Claude Code. I'm not going to pretend otherwise. The first draft of each article was generated by the AI, then I adjusted, reorganised, and added my own voice.
And that's exactly the point. AI isn't here to replace me. It's here to let me do more with the same amount of time. Quality content, vision, decisions — that's still me. But production volume, technical consistency, thoroughness — that's multiplied.
To Wrap Up
If you're a developer and you haven't tried Claude Code (or a similar tool) yet, my advice is simple: start with high-volume, low-creativity tasks. Translations, structural migrations, SEO audits, CSS animations. That's where the return on investment is immediate and spectacular.
And save your energy for what AI can't do: understanding your clients, making strategic decisions, having original ideas, and putting your personality into what you create.
The future of development isn't AI or humans. It's AI with humans. And after these 8 hours, I can tell you that the result is far better than what either could produce alone.
Thanks for following this series. If you have questions about the process, the tools or the results, get in touch — I'd be happy to discuss.
